Julia Shields is the owner and director of Free Spirit Yoga & Pilates and is a registered Canadian Yoga Alliance 1000 hour gold Yoga Teacher and Yoga teacher trainer.
Namaste: thank you for finding your way to Free Spirit. I have lived and breathed Yoga for over 30 years. Yoga has been my sanctuary during challenging times throughout my life. Yoga has helped me heal from asthma, chronic headaches and a tight sore body from many years of over use and competititve athletics. Yoga did not come easy to me, it humbled me, it made me soul search and ask a lot of questions about the direction I was heading in and my life style. It was a love hate relationship as I struggled to open my tightly wound body and calm my restless, tense mind. Since my first Yoga experience I have never turned back as I began to feel the benefits immediately. I thank Yoga for giving me back my breath, for giving me a supple and happy healthy body and mind, for taking away my headaches and giving me clarity. I thank Yoga for giving me the freedom to be who I was meant to be, an empowered, compassionate woman with gratitude for the present moment and excitement for what the future will bring. Yoga restored my faith in myself and mankind.
It is my mission to share the joy and magic of yoga with anyone willing to explore their full potential, to find peace of mind and experience wholeness and happiness in body, mind and spirit. To be the best person that you can possibly be.

After being inspired by many different Yoga Teachers and practitioners, she completed her long awaited goal of becoming a yoga instructor with her friend and mentor, Julia Shields of Free Spirit Yoga & Pilates. At which time she trained in Classical Hatha Yoga, Patanjali's Eight Limbs. Sara is fun, compassionate, energetic, easy going, down to earth and has an amazing zest for life.
Sara is inspired by movement, music and flow and teaches a broad range of Yoga styles from gentle to hatha to power flow classes. Sara is continually immersing her self in yoga workshops and other teachers classes to further her Yoga education and self awareness.

Linda in spinal twist
Linda started her yoga journey over 10 years ago when her high school teacher introduced her to Hatha Yoga as a part of physical activity. She quickly found the amazing physical and mental benefits that came along with the regular practice. Throughout the years she has practiced many different forms of yoga and has fallen in love with Classical Hatha Yoga.
In 2012 Linda completed her 200 hour level yoga teacher training. Shortly after she finished she began to practice and mentor with Julia Shields.
Feb 21, 2015 Linda completed trx suspension training and is a certified instructor.
Linda understands that instructing a class with love and compassion allows the students to feel safe and comfortable. Her instructions are clear, precise and easy to follow and she has a natural knack of connecting with the students, putting them at ease as she offers support and modifications.
Linda radiates a passion for life and it is reflected in her teaching style and her lifestyle. She is a true friend and is always willing and able to reach out and help others and volunteer her time and efforts throughout the community.
I came to yoga by accident, literally. In 2009 I was involved in the first of three motor vehicle accidents. In the ensuing months and years I received mostly chiropractic treatment and was advised a series of physical exercises, that if I committed to continue them, I would receive the long term benefits of his treatment and mitigate future injury. As I began to practice the exercises, I found myself moving my body to find a better stretch. I am learning, little by little, to follow my bodies intuitive impulses which is a stretch for me as I have spent most of my adult life pursuing the physical sciences, theology, psychology and counselling psychology.
My "rehab" routine had morphed into a series of back stretches, abdominal exercises and twists. My favorite end to a series of back stretches was to find a deep rest in a supine postion, which I later learned was "Savasana", that wonderful, restful time to quietly allow the body to integrate the practice of Yoga and to check in with my body. That was the beginning of new body awareness for me and I began to trust and understand these impulses & awarenesses.
One day my wife announced she had found a Yoga studio and was considering enrolling in classes. To her surprise I said I'd join her. My first several months of classes in Hatha and Yin Yoga, TRX and Pilates felt brutal. Although I had been a regular runner for 15 years my body was tight - really tight - all over
Yoga has provided me with many benefits:
My very tight body, after years of sitting at desks and in front of a computer, is slowly becoming more flexible and I have increased strength. The chronic pain I experienced in my neck and back after my accidents is mostly gone. I have a greater sense of well-being and confidence, as well as less anxiety and depression. I continue to learn body awareness.
Yoga can be practiced by anyone. No pretzel-like contortions are required. All it takes is the willingness to move our body to approximate Yoga poses with patience and commitment.
I began my Yoga journey so unsure of myself and with no expectations of myself other than to be open to the process. I am so grateful for every tear shed and every smile expressed on my mat, for every opportunity to dive deep within and allow those thoughts and feelings to flow through me without labels. Yoga has given me an outlet to fully experience, accept and expand myslef in a way I can not explain. My Yoga practice speaks for me when words elude me, it has not become me but let me become. I am grateful for this path that has revealed itself to me and being open enough to receive it. I am honoured for the opportnity to help others along their own journey and to share a safe and sacred space with them.

Nicola and Madelyn
I have been practicing different forms of yoga on and off for almost 10 years, but it wasn't until I became pregnant with my daughter that I felt a deeper connection to my practice. It wasn't something I did just for exercise anymore; it became so profound in my life that I was dreaming of yoga. It enabled me to connect to my baby while she was growing, strengthening my body and mind for her arrival.
The biggest reason that I love Yoga is because it is accessible and attainable to every age, shape and size. Yoga doesn't judge, expect or place limitations. Everyone can do some form of yoga and that is what I am here to show you.
I believe in having a safe and egoless practice. I offer a fun, open and kind hearted class. We will play, reflect, connect and share our energy.
I completed my 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training Program at Free Spirit Yoga studying under the guidance of my mentor Julia Shields. I am registered and insured with the Canadian Yoga Alliance. I am also certified to teach TRX suspension training. Nicola completed TRX Suspension training certification Feb. 21, 2015 at Free Spirit Yoga.
Being a yoga student at heart, I am continually learing all that I can and look forward to attaining my pre/postnatal certification in the future. I am also studying with the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition to get my registered Holistic Nutrition certification.
I am passionate about yoga, healthy eating, living as naturally as possible, and finding the right balance in life. I love to hike with my husband and daughter and our lovable but slightly crazy German shepherd.
Marieta dancer pose
Marieta I have a passion for life and have been dancing and moving for as long as I can recall. It all started with my first ballet class when I was 5 years old, then jazz, tap, Irish, Latin, baton twirling and most recently I enjoy running half marathons, hiking and cycling.
In was in 2002 when I was first introduced to Yoga that I felt I found my calling. I was hooked from day one. I have enjoyed practicing various styles over the years but always come back to Hatha, Flow and Yin as the foundation of my Yoga practice. In 2016 I decided to take the plunge and leave the corporate world and work towards a dream, to become a certified Yoga instructor. In 2017 I recieved my certification and am also in the final stages of my Barre Certification with the IBBFA. My ultimate goal as a Yoga / Barre instructor is to provide a safe, fun, supportive workout environment to help you achieve your fitness goals. I believe that keeping your body moving leads to living a happy fulfilled life, and I think everyone is capable of going for it to some degree.
Today I want to share this passion with others, to motivate and coach, to help you find your authentic self through fitness and nutrition (I am also Certified with Honours in the Culineray Arts at Vancouver Island University in 2006) in order to live that healthy, happy, fulfilled life.
I hope you enjoy my classes as much as I enjoy teaching them. Namaste
